ABSTRACT

Archival data underpin a vast array of development work and understanding, but are often overlooked in development research. This chapter conceives of the archive as comprising written documents as well as climatic records, photographs, broadcast media, government documents, postcards, political cartoons and images. We outline a range of methods that can be deployed to explore development concerns including livelihoods, democratization, othering, tourism and economic development and urbanization. Critical reflections on the challenges of accessing archives and the use of these data are engaged in relation to power dynamics, ethics and accessibility.
