ABSTRACT

The Mapping the BBC Voices website at the University of Sheffield 1 (https://cisrg.shef.ac.uk/voices" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">https://cisrg.shef.ac.uk/voices) presents the results of a recent study aimed at identifying the relationship between language and geography (Holliday et al. 2013). Based on the wealth of data collected by the BBC Voices project, the study attempts to identify regions of the UK which share common linguistic characteristics. The identification of this relationship is performed using a methodology known as cluster analysis (Sneath and Sokal 1973; Everitt et al. 2001), described below. On the website, the results of a wide range of clustering techniques can be viewed and compared.
