ABSTRACT

The previous chapters have provided the background, or foundation, to enable us to move on to look at helping skills and strategies. In this chapter we will be looking at the range of communication and interpersonal skills that a helper needs, in order to be effective when working with young people in a range of settings. Much of the material covered may be familiar to you depending on your own experience and background, so what you read will in many cases confirm or review what you already know-this should be reassuring! On the other hand, this might be the first time that you have thought about the communication skills that you already have and their professional application to your current role. If the latter is the case, then you will want to do some additional reading, to add to the ideas that are introduced in this chapter. Also in this chapter we will consider a range of strategies that are useful in a helping context.
