ABSTRACT

This chapter continues to define helping by looking at the range of activities aimed at meeting the needs of those seeking help from a youth support worker. These activities were first explored in a paper produced by UDACE (the Unit for the Development of Adult and Continuing Education) in 1986. The definitions offered by UDACE were recognised as a significant step forward in trying to establish what is happening within a guidance or helping relationship. The seven activities identified in the paper formed a basis for subsequent explorations of helping relationships in other contexts. Not all of the activities will be appropriate all of the time. The activities engaged in by the helper and the young person will be dependent on the specific needs of the young person. We are making a distinction here between helping activities and helping or counselling skills; the latter are explored in chapter 6.
