ABSTRACT

It is important in a book on middle management to consider the management of stress as the pressures and demands on middle managers are such that some potential for stress almost inevitably goes with the territory. Of course, school middle managers and indeed teachers are not the only people who have to deal with stress; many would argue that stress is endemic to modem working life and that understanding the causes of stress and strategies for dealing with it are therefore essential life-skills. Managers certainly have a responsibility to be aware of when they are stressed themselves and of when those they manage are stressed. In their approach to team relationships managers can greatly reduce the stress felt by others and by managing their own stress appropriately they can make themselves more efficient, more effective and more self-fulfilled.
