ABSTRACT

The results of a survey conducted on behalf of the National Farmers (1997) indicate an alarming lack of knowledge amongst 8–11 year olds about food and farming. Of the 250 pupils interviewed findings indicated:

50 per cent of the children thought margarine was produced from cows milk;

33 per cent thought oranges were grown in Britain;

50 per cent thought that spinach was grown abroad;

10 per cent did not know that ham came from a pig;

25 per cent did not know that bread is made from wheat.
