ABSTRACT

The early learning goals for language and literacy are linked to the objectives set out in The National Literacy Strategy: Framework for Teaching (DfEE 1998). From the perspective of ICT the most important of these are that children should be:

listening with enjoyment and responding to stories, songs and other music, rhymes and poems and making up their own stories, songs, rhymes and poems;

using language to imagine and recreate roles and experiences;

extending their vocabulary, exploring the meanings and sounds of new words;

retelling narratives in their correct sequence and drawing on the language patterns of stories;

attempting writing for various purposes, using features of different forms such as lists, stories and instructions.
