ABSTRACT

In debates on international trade the assumption is often made that export goods are ‘carried to the shore, put on a boat, and sold in second countries for what the market will bear’ as if aggressive exporters were targeting developed markets. In fact, trade in clothing and textiles appears more to be masterminded by agents in the importing countries. However, it is hard to assess who are the agents involved in international trade in textiles – statistical information on this is not publicly available.
