ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part examines the interdisciplinary links that do or should exist between the sociology of sport and other social scientific disciplines and sub-disciplines. It highlights the substantial benefits to be drawn from interdisciplinary research, not least in enabling sociologists to learn fresh concepts and methods through engaging with alternative disciplines. The part argues that a common critical stream within both disciplines – focusing on ‘social justice, relations of power, social conflict and social change’ – provides the best way ahead for the collaborative and complementary analysis of sport. It also highlights the significant influence of different social theories and perspectives on both disciplines, notably various strains of Marxism, cultural studies standpoints, and postmodernism or poststructuralism. The part demonstrates, there are common issues for scholars in the disciplines to investigate, particularly in the broad field of the sport market.
