ABSTRACT

The UK Royal Academy of Engineering (‘the Academy’) initiated its Visiting Professorships in Principles of Engineering Design Scheme in 1989. The purpose was to develop working relationships between universities and engineers LQRXWVLGHRUJDQLVDWLRQVWKXVHQDEOLQJWKHLGHQWL¿FDWLRQRIFKDOOHQJLQJDQGUHDO problems on which students could develop their design skills by interaction with experienced practitioners. The scheme was underpinned by a belief that, to be successful, engineering education needs to be embedded from the very beginning in the realities of engineering practice. It has been highly successful.
