ABSTRACT
This chapter examines preconceived ideas regarding the ‘generational contract’ – how family members are bound to exchange various types and levels of support across generations over their life-course (see Chapter 2). In particular the chapter explores whether there is a particular link between the provision of care and inheritance in the micro-level interpersonal relationship within the family, using the voices of older parents and their adult children in Britain and Japan.
