ABSTRACT

At Key Stage 2 the teacher will develop and extend reading beyond the initial stage of literacy, teaching children the higher order reading skills they will need to cope with increasingly demanding material. Children will be taught the techniques of:

Skimming: a quick reading of a text to get an initial overall impression.

Scanning: a careful reading of a text where the reader seeks specific information on a subject.

Responding: careful reading of the text where the reader responds on the topic in a personal and uncritical way.

Reflecting: a careful reading of the text where the reader reflects upon the text in an impersonal, critical way.

Summarising: a careful reading of the text where the reader identifies the salient points and condenses the material.
