ABSTRACT

A small minority of teachers may express an ethical reservation about doing anything that could be construed as fostering ‘elitism’ within the comprehensive system. However, it is important to recognise that each child has equal value and individual needs. It does not mean everybody has to be the same! Another mistake is to suppose that able pupils will fully develop their talents in any circumstances. In fact, they need as much teaching and guidance as other pupils. Accordingly, those with marked academic advantages deserve assistance, and must be encouraged and supported to make the best educational achievement within the context of the non-selective, maintained sector.
