ABSTRACT

Sectors and firms are as integral to the notion of innovation systems as they are to the study of innovation as a whole. This chapter looks at the notion of a tourism sector system of innovation, as well as firm innovation. As Malerba (2005a: 9) observed: ‘Innovation takes place in quite different sectoral environments, in terms of sources, actors and institutions. These differences are striking.’ In particular, we seek to identify some of the elements of innovation that may be particular to tourism innovation systems and/ or tourism firms.
