The territories disposed in Article 2 (d) of the San Francisco Peace Treaty were the Pacific Islands formerly under League of Nations mandate to Japan, commonly known as Micronesia. On April 12, 1947, the United Nations Security Council decided to create the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) by placing them under its strategic trust, with the USA as the administrative authority. The TTPI was one of 11 trusteeships established by the UN after the Second World War, but the only one designated a “strategic area.” Japan, not a member of the UN at that time, accepted the decision in the Treaty.
