ABSTRACT

Associated with spelling there has been an equally long history of handwriting teaching going back beyond the Middle Ages. From ancient times the most important skill of all was calligraphy first seen in the illuminated manuscripts of the Church written in Latin by monks. Now all members of our society learn to write in English in school and calligraphy is regarded as an art form. The main purpose of handwriting in schools is for communication but some schools and teachers do confuse communication and calligraphy.
