ABSTRACT
This book offers an account of the European Union (EU) from its beginnings in the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) of the early 1950s up to 2008. In doing so, it does not attempt comprehensive coverage, which would be literally impossible. Rather, it discusses certain episodes and developments that seem to have had a great influence on the evolution and subsequent history of the EC/U – whether for good or ill.
