ABSTRACT

The role of the SENCO is clearly defined in the Code of Practice. It lays down guidelines towards what the designated person may be required to do and gives a good starting point for exploring the SENCO’s role as a manager. Clear expectations are set out as to what the job could entail and in light of this, consideration should be given to the following points when establishing such roles and responsibilities.

The development of the school’s SEN policy.

The day-to-day operation of the SEN policy.

Raising the achievement of pupils with SEN.

The record-keeping for those children with SEN.

The coordination of SEN provision.

Facilitating a collaborative working relationship with staff, parents and external agencies.

Providing professional guidance to enable high quality teaching for children with SEN.

Developing effective ways of overcoming barriers to learning for children with SEN.

Sustaining effective teaching through the analysis and assessment of children’s needs by monitoring teaching and standards of pupils’ achievements.

Working collaboratively with curriculum/literacy/numeracy coordinators to ensure equal opportunities for children with SEN.
