ABSTRACT
Gyges was a shepherd. A simple, decent fellow, he liked nothing better than to
tend his flock in the service of the King of Lydia. Life was hard, but straightforward.
Until, one day, there was a great rumble and the earth itself trembled in a powerful
earthquake. When the terrifying noise stopped, and the dust cleared and Gyges
had picked himself up, he found that a gaping chasm had opened before him. Just
near where his flock a moment before had been so peacefully grazing. Indeed,
after a quick count, he finds now one of the King’s sheep is missing!
