ABSTRACT

One of the strange things about ethics is that of the wide range of books it has

spawned, there are few that have really raised their nose above the crowd. Without

doubt, there are many gems of ethics lying undisturbed in the publishers’

warehouses, or the basement shelves of libraries. The reader is therefore unable to

tap the collective wisdom of ‘popular opinion’ to find a few books to start with in

any area; rather, they must rely either on serendipitous chance (what’s in the

bookshop or library) or – worse no doubt – some official reading list. I say ‘worse’

having checked many reading lists in the course of preparing this guide and

finding that the ‘recommended reads’ are really just those of a decade or three ago

being reheated and topped with this year’s literary cherry. Meanwhile, as it were, all

around, the great sea of ethics literature lies unexplored. But here are a few ideas.
