ABSTRACT

There is a long history of writing courses outside of higher education. These range from those correspondence courses you may have seen advertised in some newspapers, which promise to refund your money if you don’t earn it back from selling your writing, through week-long or weekend residential courses (such as those run by the Arvon Foundation), to evening classes and writing groups that are avowedly for ‘fun’, treating writing as a hobby rather than for success or profit.
