ABSTRACT

By ‘creative writing’ I mean fiction, poetry, script, narrative non-fiction and the feature side of journalism (not news). By ‘doing’ I mean primarily taking an undergraduate course at a university or equivalent, but this book will also be of use to anyone considering a course in creative writing, as it covers such basic but crucial questions as: What does it mean to ‘do’ creative writing in practical terms? Can creative writing really be taught? How does ‘creative’ writing differ from other writing? What does a student of creative writing have to do, other than produce

poems or stories or plays, and why? What might be the benefits of a formal creative writing course?
