Facing the future: The primary teacher in the twenty-first century

In this chapter we examine the development of primary school teaching into a profession and argue that the status of a profession was the desire of teachers from the establishment of mass education in the nineteenth century. Current challenges to the established profession brought about by the workforce reforms of the twenty-first century are then explored.
