ABSTRACT

Introduction In Chapter 4 we have discussed policies and approaches for sustainable development of agriculture in the upper watersheds of Java. This chapter explores the need for sustainable forest management as a response to land use conflicts on the Outer Islands of Indonesia, and asks whether current Indonesian policies are encouraging sustainable management of Indonesia's production forests. Although increased economic exploitation of forest resources has been achieved in the short run, it is questionable whether the current strategy is very efficient or sustainable in the long run. There is also increasing concern over the loss of forest areas to agriculture and other uses.
