ABSTRACT
During most of human history, we have lived in communities with fairly high degrees of permanence. Almost everyone born in a community died in that same community. Within these sites of socialization, individuals found their identities and sense of self-worth. Indeed, for most of human history, individuals could not conceive of themselves as existing outside their native communities. Banishment was a fate worse than death.
