ABSTRACT

Disabilities may be physical, intellectual or a mixture of the two. The coach is likely to meet a variety of disabilities in their practice and with disability discrimination law it is to be hoped that the workplace will become increasingly open to those with such difficulties. The commonest disability in the developed world is deafness. Some disabilities are diminishing with improved diagnosis and medical care, whilst others such as autism are apparently increasing. This chapter cannot explore all areas of disability but will concentrate on those that are most likely to impinge on the coaching relationship. The best source of information about the effects of disability, particularly physical disability, is the client themselves and the coach should explore the impact this has had on their client’s life and the possible ways forward with them. Sensitive enquiry is not intrusive and will enhance the coaching relationship.
