ABSTRACT

The workforce in the care work domain defined in Chapter 1 is large, growing and consists of many occupations working in many settings – from nurseries for very young children to homes for very dependent older people. In this chapter, we map this workforce. The mapping involves estimating the size of the workforce in each of the six partner countries, then defining its structure in terms of initial education and qualification. We conclude by considering the demographic profile of the care workforce and some of the main conditions of their employment.
