ABSTRACT

One perennial issue in the area of learning technologies that is a major theme of this book is whether and how the use of learning technologies will enable us to rethink how we teach. In this chapter the focus of that debate is how we might approach teaching and learning with technologies in order to address social and affective issues – particularly student engagement. We are using the term affective in the same way as described by Oatley and Nundy (1996: 258) as a general term covering concepts such as emotion, mood, attitude and value.
