Much less dissected than other rhetorical virtuosities of the NSS 2002, this sentence encapsulates, in its simplicity, the basic intellectual and political tenets of neoconservatism. It helps us to understand its ideological foundations, its powerful rhetoric, its strong appeal to different sectors of the American electorate; but also its intrinsic, and ultimately inescapable, contradictions.
