This chapter introduces the 27 people I interviewed for this book and a further three people who contributed written accounts. Factual information about these 30 people can be found in Appendix A. With their agreement, I have used participants' ®rst names (except in cases where more than one person shared the same ®rst names so these, with their agreement, were changed).
