ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some broader themes of recovery. More speci®c aspects of recovery are addressed in Parts II and III.

Although I am writing about `recovery' and it forms part of the book's title, interestingly at least one person I interviewed questioned the use of that word. Sandra explained how she prefers to talk about `progress ± or whatever you like to call it'. Talking about progress suggests `the action of stepping or moving forward or onward' (Shorter OED, Vol. II), whereas `recovery' has the sense of going back or reclaiming something which has been lost. I continue to use the word recovery in this book, but Sandra's point seems worth including here.
