ABSTRACT

Depending on the initial outcome of their haemorrhage, people will have differing needs for information, advice, support and rehabilitation services. This chapter describes the kinds of help they had but also what they would like to have received after leaving hospital. Recent research has drawn attention to the importance of effective follow-up (e.g. Buchanan et al. 2000; Pritchard et al. 2001, 2004; Kirkness et al. 2002; Powell et al. 2002, 2004; Jarvis and Talbot 2004), but the reality is that this is by no means routinely available to people leaving hospital. There is still too often `a hiatus in care and support by community-based services' (Pritchard et al. 2001: 456), although sometimes people were able to ®nd help themselves ± through web-based message boards, for example.
