ABSTRACT

Many survivors ®nd that they feel more emotional. Recovering from a major life event and coming to terms with surviving a lifethreatening illness can be a very emotionally intense time, particularly in the ®rst few weeks and months. Mood swings, feeling low, being tearful, being anxious and lacking self-con®dence can all occur, although these feelings will often lessen over time as recovery continues. The reasons for these dif®cult feelings aren't always clear. They may be related to the brain injury or emotional reactions to what has happened ± and possibly they are caused by both of these (Foulkes 2004; Brain and Spine Foundation 2005b).
