ABSTRACT

In British Columbia, like all other Canadian provinces, discharges to the environment must be approved under the Waste Management Act (1982). Statutory approvals are provided either through a waste-management permit or a regulation covering a class of discharges. Currently, there are some 4000 permits, ranging from small operations such as asphalt plants to large industrial complexes such as pulpmills and the Cominco lead smelter at Trail.
