ABSTRACT

We have all heard a great deal about the way that information technology is transforming our lives generally; both at work and during our leisure hours. In many cases this transformation is leading to a convergence of work and leisure that is having a marked effect on the architecture of office buildings; the blurring of these boundaries can generally be witnessed by the increasingly informal work environments that include open plan as opposed to cellular office spaces, and lounge areas or coffee bars that double up as meeting points with facilities for electronic presentations. The technology that facilitates many of these “front of house” transformations has to be accommodated in a discrete and flexible manner behind the scenes; the contributors to this chapter will outline some strategic approaches to the task of integrating emerging information technologies with the building infrastructure in a seamless manner that will provide benefits to both user and owner.
