ABSTRACT

NGDOs differ from government and business in the way they raise money for their work and for their own organisational viability. They must find ways of accessing an economic surplus produced elsewhere because development with poor people does not generate what they need. Northern and Southern or Eastern NGDOs differ in the number of potential sources they can tap. This chapter looks what the sources are, how NGDOs access them and trends affecting the fund-raising capacities they require. Money from different sources has different characteristics, or qualities, in relation to development work. In addition aid funds have different temperatures which influence NGDO effectiveness. These two characteristics are employed to assess the sources that an NGDO can access.
