ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the structural dimensions of VSOs and their implications for volunteers working in sport. The chapter comprises four parts: first, a description of the organizations that comprise the nonprofit sport sector is provided including a number of examples; second, attempts to categorize VSOs through the development of taxonomies are analysed; third, the structural issues facing VSOs are discussed; and finally, the implications of these structural issues for volunteers and how volunteers contribute to maintaining the structures of VSOs are examined.
