ABSTRACT
In the Assif Amgoun Basin in the Atlas Mountains of Central Morocco, arable land is scarce. Although overall population density is low, much of the terrain cannot be farmed and each hectare of cultivable land must support an average of 28 people. Because of its exposure to the Sahara and high altitude, the zone is characterized by scarce and irregular rainfall and a wide range of daily and seasonal temperatures.
