ABSTRACT

Malawi is a small, land-locked country in southern Africa, bordered by Zambia in the west, Tanzania in the north and north-east, and Mozambique in the east, south and south-west. Current estimates put the population of Malawi, which is growing rapidly at 3.7 per cent per annum, at 10 million. The overall population density in Malawi is estimated at 85 persons per km2 (National Statistical Office, 1994).
