ABSTRACT
Air pollution has important effects on the transmission of light through the atmosphere, thereby changing the visual properties perceptible to the human eye. Degradation of visibility affects both the overall visual range (the furthest distance at which an object can be seen), and the quality of the image in terms of the visual clarity of form, texture and colour. Both elements may be important in various ways to social welfare, and impairment may therefore impose significant economic costs.
