ABSTRACT
In trying to ‘measure’ or understand the outcomes and impact of learning, it is necessary to work on the basis of a theory of learning. In the previous chapter, the concept of ‘generic’ outcomes was introduced, but in order to recognise those outcomes, clarity is needed about what counts as learning. Different ways of recognising ‘learning’ entail different kinds of outcomes.
