ABSTRACT

Learning opportunities for schools form a highly significant part of the educational provision of museums in England. The RCMG research produced an analysis of which schools used museums and what form this use took. While primary schools make the most actual visits, both primary and secondary schools are represented in proportion to their distribution across England. Special schools, where pupils may have specific learning difficulties, are, however, over-represented in relation to their numbers, reflecting high levels of use by this group of schools. Approximately one-third of the schools using museums are located in areas classified as deprived, and many of these schools have very high numbers of pupils who are entitled to free school meals because they are at risk.
