ABSTRACT

Reports on the sexual and reproductive health of the world’s young people make for difficult reading; more than 10 million young people currently live with HIV/AIDS, around 100 million new cases of curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur annually, and significant morbidity arises from complications of pregnancy and termination (UN, 2005). Less well documented, but just as disturbing, are the feelings of regret, shame, guilt, or exploitation that often accompany (too) early sexual activity. In response to the magnitude of this problem, young people, adults, authorities and institutions have employed various sexual health promotion strategies. Communication lies at the heart of such strategies, whether health education, social mobilisation or advocacy.
