ABSTRACT

It is often argued that a direct relationship exists between a teacher’s subject knowledge and her effectiveness as a teacher. In fact, you may believe that as a FL teacher this axiom applies to you more than to most other subject specialists as, in the context of optimum target language (TL) use, you are expected to use your specialist skill as the medium of communication in your lessons. Also, it can be argued that a teacher with good subject knowledge is more likely to have the confidence to exude ‘infectious enthusiasm’ for her subject and to use this to awaken and sustain pupil motivation in learning.
