ABSTRACT

A recurrent theme of this book is the increasingly important role of people-oriented conservation initiatives in protected area management. Various ‘social’ elements are now often factored into the design and implementation of integrated conservation and development projects (ICDPs), the collaborative management of protected areas, joint forest management, community-based conservation and community wildlife management (Borrini-Feyerabend, 1997a  b; Western, Wright and Strum, 1994). This chapter examines some common assumptions made about ‘people-oriented’ conservation, examines progress made and makes recommendations relating to how people-oriented conservation can be further improved in the future.
