ABSTRACT

Since the last century, tourism use of protected areas has changed from a few hundred hardy travellers to hundreds of millions, due to expanding affluence, cheaper travel costs and increasing interest in the environment. The rapid worldwide growth in tourism reveals both strengths and deficiencies in the existing management structure of nature-based tourism in protected areas. This chapter discusses the most important of these issues, reviews current literature and suggests practical policy measures to ensure that both tourists and ecosystems maximize the benefits.
