ABSTRACT
Protected areas span an immense variety of ecological habitats and social contexts, from some of the least explored areas in the world to densely populated territories highly affected by human presence. It is estimated, for example, that about half of existing protected areas and possibly 80 per cent of the ones in Latin America have people living in them (Amend and Amend, 1995). Throughout Europe, protected areas are commonly inhabited by legal residents.
