ABSTRACT

The importance of parental involvement in children’s education has long been recognised. For more than twenty years, a series of research and development programmes have consistently shown a range of benefits and positive outcomes that derive from the active encouragement and involvement of parents in their children’s learning. Parents who value education and convey their values through enthusiasm and positive parenting have a great impact upon their children’s selfperception as learners, their motivation, self-esteem and educational aspirations. In turn, confident, motivated children with healthy self-esteem are much more likely to display more of the behaviour that the practitioner wishes to see, and less unwanted behaviour.
