ABSTRACT

Did you know that approximately 90 percent of books in Los Angeles’ Bodhi Tree Bookstore describe the buddha using the word “enlightened” rather than “awakened”?1 Anyone familiar with English-language writings on Buddhism will already be aware that such a bias exists. But even an avid reader might be surprised by the magnitude of the imbalance. And for a reader of Sanskrit, the preference for “enlightened” must be especially puzzling as well.
