ABSTRACT
For children placed for adoption within the fi rst few weeks or months of life, there is a hope shared by the adoptive parents and professionals involved that all will be well. As the preoccupations of caring for and establishing a relationship with the new arrival takes precedence, it is hard to imagine that tragedy may disrupt an anticipated future. Yet adopted children are subject to the same uncertainties and changing circumstances that may befall any family.
